Compostability “compostable” is a material that can biodegrade by microbiological action in a short period of time without leaving visible or toxic residues.
During aerobic biodegradation of the material, biomass is the end product of biodegradation.

According to the Ok Compost Vincotte certifier, compostability is tested according to 4 criteria:
-Biodegradation: involves degradation by the effect of specific enzymes that cause the structure to change, releasing water, co2, methane and heat at the same time. 90% of the
material has to biodegrade after 6 months.
-Fragmentation: the physical decomposition of the material into tiny pieces (an unfragmented residue larger than 2mm of the 10% at the end of the tests is allowed).
-Heavy metals: a control of the quantities of heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.
-Ecotoxicity: a control to check that plant growth is not adversely affected.
Ok Compost Vincotte certifies and guarantees the biodegradability in an industrial composting plant of all its components, including printing inks and additives.
